      Novel Experimental Tools for Fiber Mode Analysis

      Abstract:    Two novel fiber mode analysis techniquesare introduced:Spectral and spatially resolved imaging,also known as S2 imaging, and the correlation filter technique. Combining and simultaneously performing both methods provides a unique tool to fully resolve modal fields and obtain accurate mode mixing coefficients for a wide range of multimode fields guided in optical fibers.

      About the Speaker:

      Dr. Axel Schülzgen received his Ph.D. in Physics from Humboldt-University of Berlin, Germany. Since 2009 he is Professor at CREOL, The College of Optics and Photonics, University of Central Florida in Orlando, USA. Prior to his current position, from 1996 to 2009, Dr. Schülzgen was with the faculty of the College of Optical Sciences at the University of Arizona in Tucson, USA.

      Dr. Schülzgen contributed to a wide range of scientific topics in optics, photonics, physics, and material sciences. His most important contributions are in the areas of fiber optics, lasers, and nonlinear optics of semiconductor quantum structures. During his career Dr. Schülzgen authored 100 scientific publications in peer reviewed journals. His numerous presentations at international conferences include 45 invited talks. He also authored 5 patents.Dr. Schülzgen’s current research interests include optical fiber devices, components, materials, and structures with applications in fiber laser systems and fiber optic sensing.
